Summary:The following research proposes a pedagogical interpretation of proficiency scale for the area of Human Sciences and its Technologies of the High School National Exam - ENEM, using the Bookmark method. The National Exams like ENEM must serve as an additional teaching improvement tool for the educa- tional process, being incorporated in its quantitative aspects by the managers, instructors, attendants, parents and students. It is necessary to give meaning for the Exam’s statistical and psychometrical results, since these results sometimes becomes indecipherable to the people interested in the Exam. Therefore, the Bookmark method was used to analyze the Human Sciences and its Technologies items applied in the ENEMs of 2009 to 2011, resulting in the definition and description of four proficiency levels: Elementary; Basic; Proficient and Advanced. Such analysis aims to support the future pedagogical discussions about the cut points currently set in the ENEM for the college’s certification and selection purposes.
